Message From the President

Opening Season Dinner done, now it’s all systems go for the season ahead.

Thank you to everyone who attended the season opening dinner on Friday night. From my perspective the evening was a success. The work by Ken Mason and Peter Glazbrook along with their team to organise, set up and serve the meal and drinks was fantastic, thank you. Thank you to everyone else who assisted during the evening. Our guest sponsors and Burnside Council member received the usual warm KMBC welcome. Members met sponsors Tatum Gould from Body Plus Health and Jamie Panelli and Ayesha Brine from In Focus Money management as well as Burnside Council member Kerry Hallett. We look forward to seeing more of our sponsors and council members during the season.

Welcome back!

We are very happy that Nathan Gherghetta has decided to return after a few seasons playing at Gawler. Nathan is available to play on Wednesdays.

School and WEA program

This week is the final week of both WEA and Norwood International High School PE program. Please keep an eye on the board for details of greens and times. Unfortunately, a couple of times had been deleted from the board which caused some concern to members.

This week’s matches are:

  • An internal trial on Wednesday for men’s teams beginning at midday.
  • Intra club trial on Thursday for women’s teams beginning at 10am at Beaumont. Please wear Pennant uniforms. Arrive by 9.30am at the latest because the new conditions of play may be implemented. Refer to the changed conditions below under 2023/2024 Conditions of Play.
  • There is no trial match on Saturday due to the AFL Grand Final.

2023/2024 Conditions of Play

At the recent Metropolitan Bowls Association (MBA) Presidents’ meeting there were discussion about the changes to conditions of play. I have shared changes that impact most players and included a link that will take you to all changes.

Start Times

  • Saturday: Practice finishes at approximately 12.55pm – Play begins at 1pm
  • Wednesday: Practice finishes at approximately 12.10 pm – Play begins at 12.15pm
  • Thursday: Practice finishes at approximately 9.55am – Play begins at 10.00am
  • Early start: Practice finishes at approximately 9.10am – Play begins at 9.15am

Practice: Greens are to be made available to those wishing to practice by:

  • Saturday: 12.30pm
  • Wednesday: 11.45am
  • Thursday: 9.30am
  • Early Start: 8.45am

Practice earlier than these times will be at the discretion of the home club's greenkeeper or Greens Manager only and must be respected however No practice will be allowed before 8.30am. This will impact Thursday play. Players can practice on any rink of the green of play prior to the draw of rinks for the game if the club permits. Once the draw for rinks has been completed, side Managers should notify players, and players must only practice on the rink they are drawn to play on.

Trial Ends (Roll up) / Game Start

  • Eliminating trial ends is a major change for pennant play.
  • All games will be conducted without trial ends.
  • All games at a venue will be started at the indicated time by ringing a bell or by a P/A announcement.
  • Mid-Game Break
  • Saturday Competition other than Premier League - There will a mid-game break taken at 2.30pm.
  • Wednesday Competition. A mid-game break shall be taken at 1.45pm.
  • Thursday Competition other than Premier League there is a 10-minute break at the completion of 11 ends.
  • Side Managers are advised to be mindful of their duty of care for all participants and should monitor the conditions and consider breaks, if necessary, to provide participants with opportunities to hydrate.
  • Mid-game Break duration. Every attempt should be made to limit the mid-game break to 15 minutes or less from the time the last team leaves the green.

Facilities Improvement

The Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing recently opened the 2023/24 round of the Community Recreation and Sport Facilities Program, and today I put the finishing touches on an application for funding under this program. Specifically we are seeking to upgrade the change rooms / toilets / office / storage at the eastern end of the clubrooms. I trust that we have made a strong case for funding as this area is clearly aging and needs to be updated to remove health and safety issues. The condition and compliance audit conducted as an early phase of the Master Plan project highlighted several respects in which our facilities are not compliant with the Building Code of Australia and Australian Standards, especially in relation to accessibility. Furthermore it is clearly unsatisfactory that ladies need to go into the men’s locker area to access bowls and bowls equipment. I am hopeful that our submission will be successful and we can move to improve this section of the clubhouse.

It will be February 2024 at the earliest before we learn whether this submission has been successful.

All ORSR grants will only provide a maximum of 50% of the cost of the project. I want to express on behalf of the Board of Management and all club members our heartfelt appreciation for the support of the Marryatville Trust, for without this support it would not have been possible to put in a bid for this funding.

Night Owls 2023/24.

A reminder that Night Owls commences on Tuesday 10th October and Thursday 12th October – one month away.  Please promote our evening social bowls to anyone who you think could be interested.  There are plenty of colourful Night Owls flyers in the clubhouse.  Please take some and distribute to neighbours, family and friends.  We could also do with some extra help on either night with meals and kitchen or helping new bowlers get started. If you can help us out at Night Owls please ring Anne O’Dea or Allan Wilkins.
